Local SEO: What It Is & How to Do It

If you run a local business in the Des Moines metro, Local SEO is the single highest-leverage marketing channel you have. When a nearby customer searches "near me" or "in Des Moines," you want your business in the top three map results. Here's how we help our clients get there.

    What you'll learn

    • How to fully optimize your Google Business Profile
    • Why NAP consistency and local citations still matter
    • How to earn (and respond to) Google reviews the right way
    • On-page SEO signals Google uses to rank local pages
    • How to track your map rankings across the metro

    1. Own your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the #1 ranking factor for the Map Pack. Claim it, verify it, and treat it like your homepage. Fill in every field — categories, services, hours, service areas, attributes, and photos. Pick the most specific primary category possible (for example, "Family Chiropractor" beats "Chiropractor"), and add every relevant secondary category.

Post updates weekly. Upload fresh geo-tagged photos monthly. Answer questions in the Q&A section before competitors (or random users) do it for you.

    2. Fix your NAP and build local citations

Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) must be identical everywhere online — your website, GBP, Yelp, BBB, Apple Maps, Bing Places, chamber of commerce sites, and industry directories. Even small differences (Ste vs Suite, 515.555.1234 vs 515-555-1234) confuse Google.

For Des Moines businesses, we recommend at least 40–60 clean local citations, prioritizing Iowa-specific and industry-specific directories.

    3. Make reviews a system, not an afterthought

Review volume, recency, and response rate all feed the local algorithm. Build a simple, repeatable ask: text or email every happy customer a direct review link within 24 hours of their visit. Aim for 2–5 new reviews per month at minimum.

Respond to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours. Reply with the customer's name, mention the service they received, and drop in your city naturally ("Thanks for choosing us in West Des Moines!").

    4. On-page signals that actually move rankings

    • • A dedicated location page for every city you serve (Des Moines, West Des Moines, Urbandale, Ankeny, Waukee, Clive, Johnston).
    • • LocalBusiness schema on your homepage and location pages.
    • • Embedded Google Map on your contact page.
    • • City + service in title tags, H1s, and image alt text — written for humans, not stuffed.
    • • Fast, mobile-first pages. Local searches are overwhelmingly on phones.

    5. Track the right thing: grid rankings

A single "rank check" from your office is misleading — Google shows different results a mile down the road. Use a grid ranking tool (Local Falcon, BrightLocal) to see where you rank across a 5×5 or 7×7 grid over your service area. That's how we proved a Des Moines chiropractor went from rank 20 to rank 4 in a month, and how a local A/V company moved from 7 to 2 across the metro.
